Disembodied Voice I

“Get undressed.”

“What? Why?” Amanda was a bit shocked at hearing this.

Amanda looked around. She could not see the source of the voice. There seemed to be a panel of glass in front of her, but there was no one in sight.

“If you are found naked, they are more likely to help you.” The voice responded.

At this point, Amanda looked out the window. All she could see was fire, but she wasn't afraid. It was as if she expected it.

Suddenly a loud “POP!” and she was awake.

She laid in bed for a few minutes. The dream, as odd as it was, seemed like it was real. Who was talking to her? Why couldn't she see the person behind the voice? Why does it seem familiar? Was this a real memory?

She got up and walked to the kitchen for breakfast. A protein shake, grapefruit, coffee, and some fish oils supplements.
After she had gathered everything, she sat down with her laptop, but she didn't feel like doing anything. Something bothered her about the dream.

What was that loud pop sound? It didn't seem part of the dream, but she couldn't figure out what that noise was. Maybe it was the "exploding head syndrome" she read about on the internet.

There was a knock at the door.

When Amanda opened the door, Todd stood there with a bag in his hand.

“Mind if I join you?” Todd asked holding up the bag.
Amanda smiled. “Sure, come in.”

They both sat down at the table and Todd motioned at her cup and grapefruit with a quizzical look.

Amanda chuckled. “Yeah, my breakfast appears simple, but it seems to work well.”

Todd nodded. “I know,” he reached into his bag and pulled out a couple of what appeared to be protein bars. “A friend of mine made a bunch of these for me before I left. I have a freezer stocked full of them. You want one?”
Amanda hesitated.

“They're delicious,” and he waved an opened one in the air. It already had a bite in it. As if to reinforce what he said, he takes another bite.

He then sets it on the counter, grabs another one wrapped in plastic, and studies it.

“Granted," he said after a moment, "they don't look like much, but they seem to work well.”

Amanda quickly noticed the mocking tone and swiped the bar from his hand.

The both laugh.

They started to make plans for the day, but Amanda couldn't help but notice how agitated he was. He seemed to be expecting some catastrophe. In the middle of their conversation, Todd's phone rang causing them both to jump a little.

“Todd here,” He answered. There was a long silence then Todd looked at Amanda. He sighed.

“I'm working on it,” Todd said. He sounded pleasant, but Amanda couldn't help but notice that he was not happy. “I'm with her right now. Yeah, I'll get back to you.”

“Publishers,” Todd scoffed. “I think I may have oversold your book. Speaking of which, how is that going?”
